Position Description

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant provides comprehensive care to patients with acute and chronic pain conditions in an outpatient pain management practice. This role includes patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to deliver high-quality, patient-centered pain care in compliance with federal and state regulations.

Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including medical history, physical exams, and pain assessments

  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic pain conditions (e.g., back pain, neuropathic pain, joint pain, post-surgical pain)

  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising physician

  • Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, in accordance with state laws, DEA regulations, and practice policies

  • Monitor patient response to treatments and adjust care plans as needed

  • Perform follow-up visits and ongoing pain management evaluations

  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., imaging, labs)

  • Provide patient education regarding pain conditions, treatment options, medications, risks, and expectations

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough medical records in the electronic medical record (EMR) system

  • Ensure compliance with pain management guidelines, state prescribing laws, and federal regulations (including PDMP checks and urine drug screenings as required)

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and chart audits as requested

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with physicians, nursing staff, medical assistants, and administrative team members

  • Coordinate care with referring providers, physical therapists, behavioral health specialists, and other healthcare professionals

  • Communicate effectively with patients and families to promote adherence and satisfaction

Professional Development

  • Stay current with evidence-based pain management practices and regulatory requirements

  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and continuing education activities

  • Maintain required licensure, certifications, and credentials
